Back to topluminaire protection classes
A COMPARISON of the three luminaire protection classes: IP67, IP68, and IP69K. This comparison aims to determine what lighting fixtures are the most suitable to be used for various purposes in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia.
IP67, IP68, IP69K. These short abbreviations contain a lot of information that is crucial for determining whether or not a certain luminaire suits your needs. However, the same conclusion is also true for any other fixture intended for outdoor use.
IP stands for Ingress Protection Rating, which denotes the level of protection against ingression. The XX number indicates the specific degree of protection. According to Wikipedia, “the highest degree of protection available within this classification is IP68 … IP69-K.” In this review, we will spell out and compare the IP standards, and describe the purposes for which luminaires of a particular protection class are suitable.
For an outdoor lighting fixture
to work properly in the Russian
weather conditions, it must comply
with the following requirements:
- Capability of long-term operation in full immersion into water (dirt, rain, and snow);
- Resistance to “ice impacts” (a luminaire installed into a pavement must be able to withstand deformations of the frozen ground).
LET'S COMPARE the IP67, IP68, and IP69 protection classes of LED lighting fixtures using the statutory wording of these standards provided in the international classification.
IP67 - Dust ingression is prevented completely; dust cannot get inside the fixture; full contact protection. Protection against water jets coming from any direction; water has no harmful impact on the product. Short-term immersion to a depth of up to 1 meter; short-term immersion does not lead to water ingressing the device in amounts disruptive of its operation. Functioning while immersed permanently is not envisaged.
IP68 - Dust ingression is prevented completely; dust cannot get inside the fixture. Full contact protection. The product is suitable for long-term immersion in water to a depth of over 1 meter under conditions prescribed by the manufacturer. Full impermeability to water. The fixture is capable of functioning while immersed.
IP69K - A European standard used to mark product casings that can withstand high-temperature, high-pressure washing. Such casings feature the highest possible dust protection level; dust ingression is prevented completely; full impermeability to water. The device is capable of functioning while immersed; suitable for long-term immersion in water to a depth of over 1 meter; capable of withstanding the impact of high-pressure hot water jets during washing.
Russia's harsh climate requires a standard that combines full impermeability to water (up to operation while immersed permanently) and sufficient durability (for withstanding ice impacts). Moreover, the lighting fixture should be resistant to salts and chemical agents. To this end, we, the Russian manufacturing company TRIF, have developed our own sealing and manufacturing technology.
In our luminaires, the light emitting diodes sit in a water-proof chamber made from optical polymers, which fully isolates them from the external environment. The durable welded shell from 3-millimeter-thick stainless steel enables the TRIF outdoor luminaires to withstand any deformations of frozen ground, the impact of studded snow tires and heavy-duty vehicles. They are also resistant to salt and other chemical agents. Thus, we can state the TRIF outdoor luminaires comply with an enhanced IP68 standard: the IP68/+ICE protection class that we have developed.
The TRIF luminaires are protected by the IP68/+ICE standard and capable of failure-free functioning while immersed in water, snow or ice, within a temperature range of -50°C to +50°C!
Moreover, we offer IP69K lighting fixtures of all sizes and brightness levels.

IP68 - is the necessary level of impermeability to water; it ensures long useful life of an outdoor lighting fixture in the harsh operation conditions peculiar to Russia.
However, the majority of outdoor LED lighting fixtures are manufactured by the IP44, IP54, IP65, IP66, and IP67 standards. Worth recalling, a luminaire featuring the protection class IP67 or lower allows only for a short-term immersion in water! Consequently, such a lighting fixture may fail to function in the climatic zones characterized by heavy snowfalls and rains, severe frosts and significant daily temperature fluctuations. That is why, the protection the IP67 standard envisages is insufficient!
We manufacture outdoor luminaires by the enhanced IP68/+ice standard, as well as IP69K lighting fixtures. Durable and fully impermeable to water, the TRIF outdoor luminaires can operate flawlessly in any climatic zone, from the ever-frozen Arctic Circles to the blazing tropics!
Choosing a luminaire to be used in the weather, keep in mind that outdoor lighting fixtures of the IP67 or lower (IP44, IP54, IP65, IP66) protection class are unsuitable for operation in the climatic conditions of Russia! Condensed moisture accumulates in such fixtures over time; soon they begin to leak and fail to function eventually. The IP68 standard is a must for the fixture's long-term operation in the Russian weather conditions. Moreover, a luminaire installed in the ground requires the IP68/+ice protection level, which ensures functioning while encased in ice!
